The SCAR was designed to meet the specific needs of the United States Special Operations Command (SOCOM), the US Army's special operations command.
In France, the SCAR is found within the RAID and the COS. The SCAR comes in two versions, the SCAR-L (for Light) called Mk-16 by the US armed forces and the SCAR-H (for Heavy) (Mk-17).

Equipped with a folding and adjustable stock, picatinny rails on the front and on the top of the rifle, it also features an ambidextrous firing mechanism.
